Analysis of healthcare costs of blood cancer patients

The first analysis of healthcare costs of blood cancer patients was published in Slovakia in 2017, but only covered the period of the first 12 months of treatment. The current analysis of costs is based on data from the Slovak Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna (General Health Insurance Company), the Health Policy Institute and the Social Insurance Agency and calculates the total costs, including the economic impact connected with incapacity for work.

COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF COSTS

The first analysis of healthcare costs of blood cancer patients was published in Slovakia in 2017, but only covered the period of the first 12 months of treatment. The current analysis of costs is based on data from the Slovak Všeobecná zdravotní pojišťovna (General Health Insurance Company), the Health Policy Institute and the Social Insurance Agency and calculates the total costs, including the economic impact connected with incapacity for work.

CALCULATION OF DIRECT AND INDIRECT COSTS

The total costs of treatment of one patient with multiple myeloma are 409,071 Euro. Direct costs of care from diagnosis to death of the patient are 261,475 Euro, the state’s indirect costs are 147,596 Eur. The loss of work productivity as a consequence of premature death as part of indirect costs is calculated at 127,611 Euro. Multiple myeloma particularly affects men aged 51 to 75, the average age of the patient is 63. Patients with this diagnosis live an average of 4 years after their diagnosis.
